SEATTLE -- Bartolo Colon watched the line drive fall into the outfield grass and applauded. It was all Colon could do after his attempt to toss the first perfect game in New York Mets history was thwarted. Colon came within seven outs of a perfect game on Wednesday afternoon, before giving up a two-out single to Robinson Cano in the seventh inning of the Mets 3-2 win over the Mariners. Colon left a 2-2 fastball elevated on the outer half of the plate and Cano served the pitch into left field, dropping it well in front of Eric Young Jr. "Youre a little disappointed when they get a hit, but thats what theyre trying to do," Colon said through an interpreter. "Theyre trying to get a hit and break up the no-hitter." New York manager Terry Collins went one step further than disappointment. He was certain if Colon was able to get Cano to finish off the seventh he would have completed the perfect game. Collins was the Mets manager when Johan Santana ended New Yorks franchise drought without a no-hitter in 2012. "No doubt. There is no doubt in my mind that if he got by Cano he ramps it up. You see it a lot," Collins said. "But you know, great game by him." A no-hitter is one of the few things missing from Colons resume. He has a Cy Young. Hes won a World Series title. Hes made a career comeback after injuries left him out of baseball in 2010. At age 41, Colon is pitching well enough that hes regularly being talked about as trade fodder for teams needing a starter with the non-waiver trade deadline rapidly approaching. "I dont know anything about that," Colon said. "Those are decisions for the upper management and you cant control that stuff." Colon retired the first 20 batters he faced before Canos single. Colon then had to hold on as Seattle rallied in the eighth and came within inches of tying the game on Brad Millers RBI double that hit off the top of the wall. Colon (9-8) improved to 13-1 all-time at Safeco Field, including his dominance of the Mariners when he was pitching for the Angels. Seattle had no answers for the rotund right-hander, who gave up two runs and three hits in 7 1-3 innings. "He was a Cy Young class guy," Cano said. "He knows how to pitch. Back in the day when the guy threw hard, everything was middle of the plate, fastball. Now you see a different guy that moves the ball, both sides, and a pretty good change up." Colon threw a one-hitter for the Angels against the Yankees in 2000 and was cruising until the seventh. He got the first two outs of the seventh, but Canos single ended the bid for perfection. Cano was hitting .400 against Colon entering the game. Corey Hart led off the eighth walking on a 3-2 pitch, just the fourth three-ball count Colon reached. After a fly out, Dustin Ackley singled to right, bringing the tying run to the plate. Miller nearly tied it with one swing, doubling off the top of the wall in right-centre, missing a home run by only a couple of feet. Colon was replaced by Jeurys Familia and Willie Bloomquists infield groundout scored another, but Endy Chavez struck out to end the threat. Jenrry Mejia got his 13th save pitching the ninth, despite giving up a pair of singles. "(Colon) was awesome today. Great command of his fastball. We didnt use his off-speed that much," Mets catcher Anthony Recker said. "... It made my job really easy." Daniel Murphy had an RBI double in the first and David Wright had an RBI single in the seventh. New York also had a score in the fifth when Ruben Tejada was hit in the helmet with a 94 mph fastball from Seattle starter Taijuan Walker. Tejada instantly crumpled to the ground before walking off the field on his own power. Tejada passed all initial testing and was expected to fly with the team to Milwaukee. "It scared me," Tejada said. NOTES: The Mets have 38 one-hitters in franchise history. ... Colons only loss at Safeco field came in 2001 during the Mariners 116-win season. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton (back) is expected to throw one more rehab start this weekend in the minors before possibly rejoining the club. Brooks Laich Jersey ... maybe even more than that. Maybe all season I have to take a few blows. Kurtis MacDermid Jersey . The 30-year-old Texas native was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Duke spent six years in Pittsburgh and also had stints with Arizona, Washington and Cincinnati. Nick Shore Jersey . Altidore strained his left hamstring in the Americans opener against Ghana on June 16 and didnt play in their next two games. "We dont know how much because we need to see how hes going, but hes available," U. Jonathan Quick Jersey . - Jesse Shynkaruk scored a hat trick as the Moose Jaw Warriors snapped a seven-game losing streak with an 8-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in Western Hockey League action on Saturday.TORONTO - Booed off the ice at the second intermission, the Toronto Maple Leafs watched another blue and white jersey get hurled to the ice in the third period. They werent happy about that or their performance in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.Any time you lose in the National Hockey League, as players, were not happy about it, captain Dion Phaneuf said Friday night. The fans have a right to be upset. They come to support us, they want to see winning hockey and we want to win for them. But when we dont play well, its unfortunate when jerseys are thrown on the ice.It was a night of frustrating turnovers, penalties and missed assignments for the Leafs (2-3-0) as they hung goaltender James Reimer out to dry. Coach Randy Carlyle estimated his team turned the puck over 11 times and went offside four times just in the first period. For whatever reason, we find ways to make life more difficult for ourselves, and thats the most frustrating part, Carlyle said. We played too much on our heels and in the defensive zone.Defenceman Jake Gardiner said, it seemed like (the Red Wings) had more players on the ice than we did.Thats never a good sign.It didnt help that Henrik Zetterberg was at his best, finishing with four assists including the primary one on each of the Red Wings first three goals. The captain called his last game Wednesday against the Boston Bruins one of the worst of his career and avenged it in a major way against the Leafs. It was nice to feel better today and bounce back a little bit, Zetterberg said.Zetterberg took advantage of a turnover by Roman Polak to set up Johan Franzens first of the night, then made the most of a bad change by Morgan Rielly for Franzens second. Zetterberg won a race to a puck on Nyquists fourth goal in four games this season, and he picked up a secondary assist on Justin Abdelkaders goal with Cody Franson standing frozen in front of the net.Detroit coach Mike Babcock called Zetterberg his teams catalyst. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves but wasnt tested much in goal.Down at the other end, Reimer wasnt at his sharpest in allowing four goals on 35 shots.I dont think we played up to the standard that were capable of, and myself included, said Reimer, who was making his third straight start. I got to find a way to come up with a couple big saves there to keep it close.Carlyle, whose comment about Reimers play being OK, just OK in a game late last season at the Red Wings caused an uproar, absolved his goaltender of much of the blame in this loss. Two goals were goal-mouth passes so we oobviously missed assignments, Carlyle said.ddddddddddddYou cant blame your goalie for scoring from the crease, tap-ins.Jonathan Bernier is expected to start when the Leafs visit Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night for the second half of this back-to-back. Babcock said ex-Leafs goaltender Jonas Gustavsson will get the nod for the Red Wings (2-1-1).The Leafs will not have winger Brandon Kozun for that game and quite possibly for a long time after he suffered what appeared to be a high-ankle sprain. Carlyle said Kozun will have an MRI on his left ankle Saturday, something that means either Matt Frattin or Carter Ashton will be in the lineup in Detroit. It could be both if forward Daniel Winnik, who left the game with an upper-body injury, cannot play.Kozun was the most pleasant surprise of training camp and had been one of the Leafs best penalty-killers so far this season. He was part of Torontos 5-for-5 effort Friday night before getting injured.Franzen, whose two goals were his first of the season, left in the second period with leg spasms but said hell probably play Saturday. It just cramped up, the whole side, a really tight spasm, Franzen said. It relaxed a little bit, I got out for the next shift and it just seized up on me. As soon as I pushed it just cramped up on me, so hopefully it goes away tomorrow.Mike Santorelli scored the Leafs only goal, infusing some life into Air Canada Centre 21 seconds into the third. It quickly dissipated, and then more than halfway through a fan tossed his jersey onto the ice.Its the second time in four home games this season that a fan has done that. Its not the majority of fans, its one or two fans that are displeased and they want to show their displeasure that way, but I dont agree with it, Phaneuf said. Not agreeing with it doesnt mean Phaneuf disagreed with the displeasure itself. Other than the penalty kill, there wasnt much for the Leafs to be thrilled about in this defeat.Every game things arent going to go our way, Phaneuf said. When the momentum shifted against us, it seemed to be a hill that we just couldnt overcome and we have to work on that.Notes — This was the first of eight Friday night games for the Leafs this season and first of three at Air Canada Centre. In the past nine seasons dating to the 2004-05 lockout, Toronto hosted a total of three Friday night games. ... Several new Canadian citizens were sworn in at a ceremony at centre ice earlier in the day, and they helped anthem singer Doug Tranquada sing O Canada.---Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '
