PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are continually refining their game with the playoffs approaching. They looked ready Monday night. Marc-Andre Fleury robbed former Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson with a sparkling third-period glove save and James Neal scored at 3:05 of overtime, giving the Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators 2-1. "I just tried to get my leg, my glove over there and try to stop it," Fleury said. "I was glad it went in my glove." Neal netted his 18th of the season and his first goal in nine games for the Penguins, who won for the 16th time in 17 home games and are now 23-4 at Consol Energy Center. Pittsburgh also avoided back-to-back regulation losses for the first time since dropping three straight in early November. "When you dont score you sometimes try to pick corners and be a little too cute," Neal said. "I was able to find one tonight. It was a good feeling." Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson stopped Robert Bortuzzo from the slot in overtime, but the rebound popped out to Neal, who dragged the puck around a Senators defender before dumping a shot past an out-of-position Anderson and into an empty net. "I was trying to be patient with the puck and wait for an opening," Neal said. "I knew their D-man was going to go down and Anderson was kind of far out when (Bortuzzo) got the puck to the net." Ottawas Stephane Da Costa and Pittsburghs Brian Gibbons scored in the first period. Ottawas best chance to take the lead in regulation came midway through the third period, but Fleury robbed Karlsson with a dazzling glove save. Fleury, while pushing from post to post, reached high above the cross bar, snagging the fluttering wrist shot from Karlsson, who had a partially wide open net to shoot at. "I dont know if theres a save that beats it," Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said. "It was going high to the right corner and he had to get up there and get it. "It was an open cage, he pushes over, and gets the glove up to make the save. I hope we see this one over and over again." Karlsson might see it in his sleep. The Senators leading scorer fell to the ice in astonishment after Fleurys stop. "I just smiled at him," Karlsson said. "Theres nothing I can really say. He knows he made a good save and unfortunately Im going to be on the highlights for quite some time with that one." Fleury stopped 24 shots for his league-leading 30th win of the season, while Anderson turned aside 46 shots for the hard-luck loss. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who leads the NHL with 75 points, was held without a point and hasnt scored a goal in five games, his longest drought since a seven-game slump earlier this season. "Hes 100 per cent," Bylsma said. "He was our best player on both sides of the puck and I thought he played an excellent game regardless of whether he got a point or not." The Penguins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 80 points, went 6-3-1 their previous 10 games, looking dominant during impressive wins against Montreal and Los Angeles but struggling in losses against Edmonton, Florida, Dallas, and Phoenix, all teams out of playoff contention. The Senators handed the Penguins arguably their worst loss of the season Dec. 23 in Ottawa, shutting them out 5-0 in a physical contest that saw Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis tear his anterior cruciate ligament on a hit from Marc Methot. Ottawa, in the mix for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot, allowed three goals in the final 5:58 during a 6-3 loss at Toronto on Saturday, the second time in four games the Senators allowed six goals. The improved, hardened defensive effort Monday was certainly enough to help the Senators a win but they couldnt take advantage of their opportunities. "We played hard," Anderson said. "We gave ourselves the opportunity to be there. Just unfortunate we didnt come out with two points." Ottawa broke through at 5:56 of the first period, Da Costa scoring his third of the season after he lifted a short-side wrist shot over Fleurys shoulder from the top of the crease. Ottawas Zack Smith took a boarding call 29 seconds later and the leagues top power-play unit capitalized with the man advantage winding down, tying the game after Gibbons tipped Olli Maattas shot from the point past Anderson. That was all until Neals goal in the overtime won it for Pittsburgh. But it took until the playoffs for the Canadiens to find the balanced attack they have sought all season. Getting offensive production from all four forward lines has helped them win the opening three games of their first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. They can sweep the best-of-seven series with a win on Tuesday night at the Bell Centre. "Thats a big strength," Eller said Monday. "I cant stress how important it is to have everybody involved, everybody contributing." Players who underachieved on attack all season, notably Eller and Bourque, have found new life in the post-season. It has helped the normally low-scoring Canadiens average four goals per game against the Bolts, who are missing top goaltender Ben Bishop to an arm injury. Bourque, a two-time 27-goal scorer who had a dreadful campaign of only nine goals, has three in as many games in the playoffs while playing left wing with centre Eller and right-winger Brian Gionta. Eller, who had 12 goals in 77 games including stretch of 24 games with only one assist, has two goals and shares the team scoring lead with four points with Brendan Gallagher and defenceman P.K. Subban. The Eller line has produced five goals, one more than Gallaghers unit with Tomas Plekanec and Brandon Prust. The top line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek has scored only twice, but has combined for 29 shots in three games. The fourth line of Daniel Briere with Michael Bournival and Dale Weise has only one goal, but it was a big one as Weise scored in overtime in Game 1. "Right now we have momentum and were riding that wave," said Eller. "We knew depth was going to be important and I think a big part of why were having success is we have all four lines contributing in one way or another. "I guess the playoffs are just bringing out the best in all of us." The Lightning are aware they have dug themselves a deep hole. Only three teams have ever come back from a three-game deficit to win an NHL playoff series, most recently the Philadelphia Flyers against Boston in the second round in 2010. The Canadiens are 31-0 when holding a 3-0 lead. Tampa Bay had its best outing in Game 3 on Sunday night, but dropped a 3-2 decision. They thought they had a 2-1 lead in the second period, but Ryan Callahans goal was waived off due to Alex Killorns incidental contact on goalie Carey Price. "That was obviously a tough one to swallow," said Lightning star Steven Stamkos. "A couple of calls didnt go our way. "We cant dwell on it now. We realize the situation were in. We just have to win one game. Our backs are against the wall. Im pretty sure youre going to see a good effort from us. Thats our motto right now: Just win one, then lets go back home and see what happens." Some wondered if Stamkos would be fit to play after taking an accidental knee to the head from Caanadiens defenceman Alexei Emelin late in the second period.dddddddddddd. He returned for the third, but admitted later he took a major whack to the head. "I feel pretty good so, yeah, Im expecting to play," he said. "I got tangled up with Prust there and slid in. "I dont think Emelin saw me and I got a pretty good knee to the head. Now that I saw it, I dont think there was any intention or anything. It was just kind of a play that happens in a game." Emelin and his defence partner Andrei Markov were given a day off as the Canadiens held a short practice at their suburban training centre at the same time the Lightning skated at the Bell Centre. The talk was mostly about how all four Montreal lines have played well in the series, which is a surprise on a team whose first unit carried the attack for much of the season. After Vanek was acquired at the NHL trade deadline, he, Pacioretty and Desharnais produced 20 goals in the last 18 games of the regular season. "Im not surprised," said coach Michel Therrien. "We have to play well as a team defensively and that includes our forwards and our defence. "We have to stick to our structure, stick to the game plan. This is when were at our best offensively. When we start running around, thats when we get in trouble. But a lot of credit goes to the players. They stick to the game plan and they believe in it. And they have a lot of fun to play in that structure because they get results." Montreals only area of concern is special teams. The power play that went 0-for-23 over the final eight regular season games has only one goal in 11 chances in the playoffs. They spent the time leading up to the series working on the power play, but it continues to struggle. "The only thing we need to improve on is the power play," said Vanek. "We got some good chances again, but weve got to start burying our chances. Its something Im sure well address and get better at." The Lightning have two goals on six chances against Montreals penalty killing, which was fourth best in the league in the regular season. So far, the Canadiens have done enough at even strength to beat coach Jon Coopers young Lightning. Now they hope to end it in four games. As teams have always done in that situation, the Canadiens told each other the fourth win in the hardest to get. "The first three were pretty tough, too," said Vanek. "Cliches are cliches. We enjoyed the win. Everyone felt good about it. Todays a new day. Well get back to work and hopefully we can close it out." Coopers message was much the same -- just win the next one. "Im not going to throw out all the cliches and lets win one for the Gipper and all those little kinds of things," he said. "The reality is you cant win a series in one game. "I truly believe theres not much more wrong that can go against us. At some point karmas going to come around and we just need it for one night. All of a sudden you just gotta win one and you win that one and everybodys back on a plane. Who knows what happens after that?" The Reds have added outfielder Billy Hamilton - one of professional baseballs fastest players - to help them try to catch the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central. And he has responded by stepping up his play. Griffin had 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 112-95 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday night. The Clippers improved to 7-3 since Paul, who was averaging 19.6 points and 11.2 assists, was injured. "Blake doesnt run from a challenge," Clippers guard Jamal Crawford said. "Hes one of the hardest workers Ive seen." The Clippers enjoyed a strong outside game, opening up Griffin on the inside, and he finished with his 27th double-double. "(I want to be) a leader for us, knocking down shots and being able to mix up my game, going inside when I felt the need to and going outside when I needed to," Griffin said. Crawford added 19 points for the Clippers, who had six players score in double figures and shot 54 per cent from the field -- including 13 for 21 on 3-pointers. DeAndre Jordan added 10 points and 12 rebounds. "They were open, the right guy was taking them, all of our 3-point shooters," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "They made them, and that opened it up for Blake." Carlos Boozer scored 22 points for the Bulls, who snapped a three-game winning streak. "I dont think any aspect of our defence was any good," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. The Clippers have won four straight against the Bulls, and improved to 3-2 on their seven-game trip. The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with defenceman Ron Hainsey on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Hainsey $3 million for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons and $2.5 million in 2016-17. The 33-year-old Hainsey was one of two Hurricanes to play in all 82 games last season; his first with the team. MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid beat 10-man Espanyol 1-0 at home Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 aggregate score. Having won the first leg 1-0 in Barcelona, Madrid entered the match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium already in control and quickly sealed its place in the semifinals when Jese Rodriguez scored in the seventh minute. The young forward continued to win over Madrids fans by chesting forward Xabi Alonsos precise lobbed pass while on the run before firing the ball beyond goalkeeper Kiko Casilla. Cristiano Ronaldo was frustrated several times by Casilla, and the Portugal forward was booked when he tripped Sidnei from behind in the second half. Espanyol never seriously tested Iker Casillas in the opposite net even before Victor Sanchez was sent off in the 77th with his second yellow card. Madrid will play the winner of the quarterfinal between defending champion Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. Atletico leads 1-0 heading into Wednesdays second leg. The game featured Madrids Nacho Fernandez playing against his brother Alex Fernandez. Nacho said it was "not normal at all" to face Alex, who left Madrid for Espanyol last summer. "It was very strange to play against one another," Nacho said. "We used to play together on Madrids (B-team). But at the end you just play the game." The New York Islanders signed a goaltender to a long-term deal, signifying their expectation that they will be better next season. Numbers Game looks at the Islanders securing the services of Jaroslav Halak. The Islanders Get: G Jaroslav Halak. Halak, 29, was going to be one of the best free agent goaltenders available this summer when the Islanders made a pre-emptive move to acquire him from Washington. While there are ups-and-down in Halaks game from year to year, over the past five years, he has the third-best save percentage among goaltenders with at least 200 games played. Over the same time period, Halak has a .927 save percentage during 5-on-5 play, which puts him in pretty good company. As noted, there have been ups and downs in Halaks performance, with the worst of the downs his 2012-2013 season -- an injury-plagued season in which he finished with an .899 save percentage in 16 games. In every other season, since 2008-2009, Halaks save percentage has ranged from .910 to .926, so there is a good chance that he can provide above-average goaltending for the Islanders and that would represent a significant upgrade. Using Hockey References Goals Saved Above Average, for example, Halak has saved approximately 42 goals above average over the past five years and will effectively be replacing Evgeni Nabokov, who is 11.51 goals above average over those same five years (one of which was spent in Russia), so just on average over those seasons, Halak would provide a five-to-six goal difference and factoring in that Nabokov is 38 and Halak is 29, its clear that Halak is likely to have superior numbers over the next four seasons. Halak signed for four years and $18-million, which is entirely reasonable for a starting goaltender. His cap hit of $4.5-million ranks 15th among goaltenders already signed for next season. The decision to sign Halak and, on the same day, announce that they would be keeping this years first-round pick (meaning that the Islanders 2015 first-round pick goes to Buffalo) is a clear indication that the Islanders expect to rebound from this down season and, believe it or not, thats a perfectly reasonable decision. They finished 19th in Fenwick Close (unblocked 5-on-5 shot attempts, within one goal in first two periods, tied in third), which is a good measure for puck possession and did so with several notable injuries and players departing via trade, so its fair to think that the Islanders can be a middle of the pack club, with goaltending offering the chance to be a bit above average or, if it goes wrong again, below average. Those expectations will put Halak in the spotlight, but his track record is strong enough to justify the Islanders investment. The Capitals Get: A fourth-round pick. While Halak played well for Washington, after coming over in trade from St. Louis, posting a .930 save percentage in a dozen games, its also not a surprise that Washington might not be inclined to keep him long-term. After all, the Capitals already have Braden Holtby, who has a .919 save percentage in 105 career games, as well as prospect Philip Grubauer (.924 SV% in 19 GP with Capitals) waiting in the wings, so there wasnt a lot of upside to spending on Halak. Of course, this decision cant entirely ignore the fact that the Capitals dont have a general manager since firing George McPhee. Brian MacLellan made out quite well in the interim, however, securing a fourth-round pick in exchange for negotiatiing rights to an asset that the Capitals apparently didnt intend to keep. There isnt a lot of value to a fourth-round pick, maybe a 15% chance that it turns into an NHL player, but for a player that could provide zero value to Washington next season, thats well-played. SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers know Aldon Smith still has plenty of work to do in order to repair his tarnished image and stay on track away from the football field. They want to be an integral part of his self-improvement project, exercising their 2015 fifth-year contract option for the star linebacker on Friday. The team made the decision despite Smiths long list of legal trouble that included an arrest at Los Angeles International Airport just more than two weeks ago. San Francisco faced a Saturday deadline to decide on Smiths immediate future, and general manager Trent Baalke suggested last week the team would keep the fearsome pass-rusher around for the near future at least -- for 2015, "and 16, and 17 and 18." The 49ers will provide Smith with the support he needs to deal with his rash of off-the-field issues. Yet Baalke has made it clear there must be positive change, and soon. San Francisco realizes Smith still could face a suspension from the NFL for his DUI last September, and is expected to look for depth at linebacker during next weeks NFL draft. "Well, that remains to be seen. You prepare for the worst and hope for the best," Baalke said of a potential suspension for Smith. "There are still a lot of things that are going to factor into that decision at the league level and the club level. Were working very diligently in the background trying to make sure the right decisions are made long term, not only for Aldon but for this club." In his latest run-in with the law, Smith was arrested April 13 at Los Angeles International Airport. Police say the 24-year-old NFL star was randomly selected for a secondary screening and became unco-operative with the process, telling a TSA agent that he had a bomb. The district attorney has referred the case for misdemeanour consideration. That followed Smiths five-game absence last season to undergo treatment for substance abuse after a September DUI arrest. In November, he pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a June 2012 party at his home. Investigators say several shots were firred, two partygoers were injured and Smith was stabbed.dddddddddddd In the subsequent investigation, prosecutors say detectives found five unregistered, illegal weapons in Smiths house, including two Bushmaster rifles and an Armalite AR-10T. Yet, what Smith brings on the field makes him one of the NFLs best at chasing down and pressuring quarterbacks. Smith emerged as one of the leagues most-feared pass rushers in 2012. He had a franchise-record 19 1/2 sacks that year, but failed to record a sack in his final six games including the teams post-season Super Bowl run. Smith finished with 8 1/2 sacks and 34 tackles in 11 games last season, making eight starts. His 42 sacks are second-most in the NFL since he entered the league. He and former teammate Delanie Walker were named in a lawsuit last September filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court by a Northern California man who said he was shot at a party at Smiths house on June 29, 2012. The players charged a $10 admission and $5 per drink, the lawsuit said. Smith and now-Tennessee Titans tight end Walker were allegedly intoxicated on Smiths balcony when they fired gunshots in the air while trying to end the party, the lawsuit said. Smith, selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft out of Missouri, had previously been arrested on suspicion of DUI in January 2012 in Miami shortly after the 49ers lost in the NFC championship game. Baalke and the rest of the 49ers hope Smith will learn a lesson at last, and become a better person because of it. Smith said during a January interview with The Associated Press he was encouraged by his strides and confident he had made positive changes in his life. "Im a firm believer in the humanistic approach to everything. You continue to work just like you would with any family member," Baalke said. "Were a family. You dont just open the door and toss people out of it. You continue to work until they leave you no choice. Thats what were going to do. Were going to continue to work with him, were going continue to find ways to support, not defend, we cannot defend the actions of others, all we can do is support." ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Its been almost seven years since the Blue Jays last won a series at Tropicana Field. Theyll have to capture both Wednesday and Thursday nights games to break the unbelievable skid, which has reached 19 consecutive series either lost or tied. Manager John Gibbons, who was in his first tenure as Blue Jays manager the last time the club took a series from the Rays in St. Petersburg, from April 6-8, 2007, has taken to calling the barren stadium his teams "House of Horrors." "Weve seen some crazy things happen here," said Gibbons. "They open the door. I dont know what it is. Its something and they expect it over on the other side. Theyve done it so many times, they expect it." The Blue Jays were waxed, 9-2, on Opening Day Monday, a game in which Murphys Law applied. Everything that could go wrong did, from R.A. Dickeys unimpressive outing to Jose Reyes pulling up lame with a recurrence of the hamstring inflammation that plagued him late in spring training. Even Tuesdays 4-2 victory, a game in which Toronto led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth, was a nail-biter at the end. The Rays had the tying run in scoring position with two out in the ninth and the winning run at the plate. "You know its tough to win here and it usually takes nine tough innings," said Gibbons. While it may sound like an obvious, generalized comment, first baseman-designated hitter Adam Lind believes its important to play with the lead against the Rays and the sooner, the better. "Its hard to come from behind against Tampa," said Lind. "When youre in the lead, theyre out of their comfort zone and when youre running out of innings or wherever they want to be with their pitching staff where they can just tack on a run here or a run there. Its paramount to get a lead against these guys because even when its 1-0, theyre definitely in the drivers seat." There are teams that are harder to prepare for than others. There are teams that are harder to play against than others. "Its tough, man," said Lind. "You just tell by how they pitch, (pitching coach) Jim Hickey, its like we play them every game how they pitch us. They get excellent execution from their pitching staff and their whole defensive side of the ball is probably the best in the game." Challenges with the challenge Adam Lind offered the line of the season so far on the topic of managers challenges and the ramifications of the new rule. "Well, I know Bud Seligs worked his whole career to get the pace of play up and now were just back to square one," said Lind. "I enjoy that theyre going to have the calls right but I dont think anyone saw the whole, are we going to do it or not going to do it?" The issue is the stalling. Both John Gibbons and Joe Maddon have emerged from their dugouts to politely dispute a call – thats another problem, the intensity of the manager-umpire argument is all but taken away – while their video coaches review the footage. Theyre waiting for a signal from the dugout on whether to challenge. "I think thats just the way the game is going to go now," said Lind. "I guess the higher ups didnt think about that before the whole walk-out but youre going to do whatever you can to get outs or get people safe. Just like (Tuesday) with Gibby, if you still have a challenge left, you might as well use it." Happ throws a bullpen J.A. Happ, on the disabled list with a back injury, threw a bullpen session on Wednesday at Tropicana Field. "Hes feeling much better, definitely feeling good, played catch (Tuesday), threw a light side today and really feels no ill-effects from the issues with the back right now and hell progress accordingly," said pitching coach Pete Walker. "Well discuss now what the next step is, if its to get him in a game, when that will be, and progress him from there." Santos survives ninth Sergio Santos got the save in Tuesdays 4-2 win but not before the Rays put a scare into the Blue Jays. Tampa Bay brought the winning run to the plate with two out, in the person of Yunel Escobar, and had the tying run on second base after a double steal on the first pitch of the Escobar at-bat. Santos didnt bother with the base runners. Why? It all goes back to a conversation he had with Yankees legendary closer Mariano Rivera in 2011. "My whole thinking is Escobars the only guy that can hurt me," said Santos. "Whether there are runners on first and second or second and third, to me, in that situation is irrelevant because I know if I get my job done, which is getting the hitter out, it doesnt matter what base theyre on. "That was one of the things that Mo had stressed was not to be so preoccupied with whos on the bases and what theyre doing because the second you give some of your attention on the base runner and youre not fully with the hitter, thats when bad things can happen." According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the New York Rangers winger skated with extras and goalies today.(SportsNetwork.com) - The New Jersey Devils have managed to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference playoff race thanks to their recent play. The club hopes to add another win to its cause when the Calgary Flames visit Prudential Center on Monday. The Devils have posted wins in three of their last four games and are currently riding a seven-game point streak with a 4-0-3 record over that stretch. Still, New Jersey is just outside the playoff picture with 84 points, leaving the club tied with Toronto and three points behind Columbus for the Easts second wild card spot. The Devils also are four in back of Detroit for the first wild card berth. Like Columbus and Detroit, the Devils have four games remaining in the regular season, while the Maple Leafs have only three tilts left. New Jersey is the only team from that group in action on Monday. New Jersey won its second straight game on Saturday with a 3-1 road victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Dainius Zubrus scored twice and Cory Schneider stopped 26 shots to help the Devils record two valuable points. Zubrus recorded his second two-goal game of the campaign and now has 13 markers on the season. "It was nice for (Zubrus)," Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said of Zubrus. "He works hard every night and doesnt get rewarded a lot." Travis Zajac netted what proved to be the game-winner 6:34 into the second, while Schneider turned aside all eight shots he faced in the third for the Devils. Schneider has started the last three gammes for New Jersey and could get the call over Martin Brodeur again tonight.dddddddddddd The 28-year-old American is 4-2-0 with a 2.13 goals against average and .936 save percentage in six career games against Calgary. New Jersey has won two straight and three of its last four home games and is 20-10-8 in Newark this season. Although the Flames have been eliminated from postseason contention out West, the club has played with pride down the stretch and picked up a second straight win in Fridays 2-1 road victory at Florida. The win gave Calgary a 2-2-0 mark on a five-game road trip that ends tonight in the Garden State. Mike Cammalleri netted the winner early in the second period and Joey MacDonald stopped 34 pucks to help the Flames down the Panthers, 2-1. Kenny Agostino also produced his first NHL goal for the Flames, who have won six of 10. "We promised our fans and we even promised ourselves that we would play the games to win until the final second of the regular season," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said of his team playing hard down the stretch. Calgary, which is 15-20-4 as the road club this season, beat a visiting Devils club back on Oct. 11. Sean Monahan notched the game-winning goal with 2:43 remaining for the Flames, as they downed the Devils, 3-2, at the Saddledome. The Flames have won two straight and three of their last four overall games against New Jersey, but the Devils have claimed two in a row and three of four at home in this series. GENEVA -- In a dramatic climax to one of the tightest groups in Champions League history, Borussia Dortmund needed an 87th-minute goal at Marseille to advance at the expense of Napoli which beat Arsenal. Dortmund, last seasons beaten finalist, was on the brink of elimination and missed a series of chances against the 10-man French side until Kevin Grosskreutz scored to clinch a 2-1 win. Instead, Dortmund won the group ahead of Arsenal, which lost 2-0 to Napoli as all three teams finished on 12 points and head-to-head tiebreakers sent the Italians out. "What a feeling! We were almost out of the competition. This is great. We deserved it. And I didnt even hit the ball right," said Grosskreutz, who was born and raised in Dortmund. On a tense day for Italian clubs, AC Milan advanced by clinging on for a 0-0 draw at home to Ajax after captain Riccardo Montolivo was sent off in the 22nd minute. Juventus exited in the afternoon after Wesley Sneijder scored late for Galatasaray to win 1-0 in atrocious weather and pitch conditions in Istanbul. The match had resumed after being abandoned in snow and hail on Tuesday evening. Barcelonas progress was smooth and easy as Neymar scored three in a 6-1 rout of Celtic, ensuring the Spanish champion won Group H ahead of Milan to be seeded in the draw on Monday. Schalke beat Basel 2-0 to finish runner-up behind Group E winner Chelsea, which beat last-placed Steaua Bucharest 1-0. Germany will have four teams in the last-16 draw for the first time, and England also has its full quartet remaining. Italy has only Milan, confirming the recent slump of Serie A clubs in Europes top competition. Zenit St. Petersburg advanced with the worst record, stuck on just six points -- six fewer than Napoli -- after losing 4-1 at Austria Vienna. However, third-placed Porto failed to take advantage, having a penalty saved in its 2-0 loss at Group G winner Atletico Madrid. Dortmunds progress seemed under control when Polish forward Robert Lewandowski scored in the fourth minute against Marseille, which lost all its group matches. Though Souleymane Diawara levelled with a header in the 14th, Marseille was soon reduced to 10 men when Dimitri Payet was shown a second yellow card for being adjudged to have dived in the Germans penalty area. Dortmund laid siege to the home goal in the second half but Lewandowski missed an open goal, putting his shot into side netting after rounding goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. Marco Reus, who had earlier struck the post, shot over from six meters (yards) and Lewandowski was denied a penalty claim in the 85th when bundled to the ground by Mandanda. When Grosskreutz scored, Napoli then led Arsenal through Gonzalo Higuains 73rd-minute goal but needed to win by three goals. Despite Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta being sent off in the 75th, Napoli added only a second from Jose Callejon in stoppage time to complete one of the unluckiest group-stage exits since the Champions League format was created in 1992. Milan put up a defensive barricade to fend off Ajax attacks after Montolivo was shown a straight red card for stamping on Christian Poulsen. "It seems to me that anti-football won today," said Ajax coach Frank de Boer, who suggested that World Cup final referee Howard Webb should also have sent off Mario Balotelli in the second half. Red cards decisions were a factor at Schalke where Basel needed only a draw to advance. Basel defender Ivan Ivanov was sent off in the 31st, two minutes after Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes had been shown only a yellow card in a similar situation at the other end. Schalke led in the 50th when Julian Draxler connected with a first-time shot from a right-flank cross, and Joel Matip exploited Basels failed offside trap seven minutes later. Brazil star Neymar had yet to score for Barcelona in the Champions League until adding a third first-half goal Wednesday, after strikes from Gerard Pique and Pedro Rodriguez. Cristian Tello got the sixth before Giorgos Samaras got last-placed Celtics consolation. Third-placed teams in the groups -- including former European champions Ajax, Juventus and Porto -- will transfer to the Europa League in that competitions last-32 draw on Monday. Juventus will host the final in May. In the Champions League draw, seeded teams cannot play a team from their own country or the team it already played in the group. ------ Seeded teams: Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona. The two combined for 42 points in a 104-91 victory over Sacramento on Friday night. While Lillard envisions the partnership with Aldridge rising to the level of say, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, he insists the Blazers are about much more. "We need to be (among the leagues elite), we talk about it," Lillard said. "But weve got a great supporting cast. We dont have to do it all." Lillard finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Aldridge added 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. The Blazers led 54-49 at the half and by as many as 14 points in the third quarter. "Damian and L.A., theyre kind of our go-to guys and they came through tonight," coach Terry Stotts said. DeMarcus Cousins almost singlehandedly carried the Kings with 35 points and nine rebounds. Sacramentos lone win so far this season came in the opener against Denver. Cousins said the loss was about "small things" turning into "big things." "We gotta gang rebound. You just cant depend on the bigs to grab all the rebounds," he said. "A lot of those rebounds go out of our area so weve got to be able to rebound out of our area. Weve got to get some help from the outside because when you dont, they get a lot of second-chance opportunities." Cousins pulled the Kings within 90-84 with a layup in the fourth quarter, but Aldridge countered with a turnaround jumper and six points was the closest Sacramento would get. Aldridge became the first Blazers player to score at least 20 points in each of the teams first five games since Clyde Drexler in 1988. It was the first game of a home-and-away back-to-back between the two teams. The Blazers visit Sacramento on Saturday night. "It will be a different game. Theeyll be at home and theyll want to beat us for a little payback," Blazers forward Nic Batum said.dddddddddddd The Blazers went ahead 29-22 in the first quarter. Former Blazer Damon Stoudamire did it with Toronto in 1996. Mo Williams layup stretched Portlands lead to 37-26. Late in the half, Wesley Matthews hit consecutive 3-pointers to put Portland in front 52-42. Matthews finished with 18 points. Cousins, who had 18 points and six rebounds in the first half, struggled in Sacramentos 105-100 loss at home to the Hawks on Tuesday. Shut down by Atlantas Al Horford, Cousins had 11 points and six rebounds, far off his average of 18.3 points and 9.3 rebounds. Cousins layup got the Kings within 54-53 early in the third quarter, but the Blazers took off on a 12-0 run to take a 68-55 lead midway through the period. The Kings struggled defensively against the Blazers, who had six players in double figures and shot nearly 50 per cent from the floor for the game. LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool completed the signing of England midfielder Adam Lallana from Southampton on Tuesday. Lallana, who is believed to have signed a five-year deal, underwent a medical at Liverpools training ground on Friday after Southampton accepted a reported "Im so excited for the next chapter of my career, coming to a special club like Liverpool," Lallana said in an interview with the official team website. "Im quite humbled and I just cant wait to get started. "Hopefully I can settle in quickly, and I will give it my best throughout the whole time Im here. I hope I can add something to the team and hopefully we can win trophies while Im here, because thats why Im here -- for success." Lallana impressed last season with Southampton, with nine goals and six assists earning him a place on the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. The 26-year-old was also part of Englands World Cup squad and featured in all three matches in Brazil before the disappointing group stage exit. Lallana, who has chosen the No. 20 jersey, will now go on holiday before joining his new teammates for pre-season training in about three weeks. There will be a familiar face around as former Southampton teammate Rickie Lambert was signed by Liverpool last month. "Its great that I can continue my career with him as well. Thats a special moment," Lallana said. "(Its) a massive help. Ive spent the last four or five years with him. "Weve had great careers at Southampton and achieved something special, but were both thoroughly looking forward to the new challenge. Its Rickies boyhood club and a club I cant wait to be a part of." Liverpool missed out on its first league title in 24 years last season, finishing second to Manchester City by two points following a thrilling finale. "Watching the run-in towards the end of last season was unbelievable," Lallana said. "Deep down, I was thinking to myself: hopefully one day Ill be able to play in that team. That dream has become a reality now, so I cant wait for that to get started. Lallana scored 58 goals in 250 appearances during his eight seasons at Southampton, and became club captain in 2012. The fixture list means Lallana and Lambert are likely to make their competitive debuts at home to former club Southampton on the opening day of the season. "It would have been worse if it was at St Marys, Im glad its at Anfield," Lallana said. "But to be lining up against my teammates from last year just had to happen. Its fate. Rickie and I spoke about it, and he said he could have bet his mortgage on it, he knew it was going to happen." Lallana is Brendan Rodgers third signing of the summer after Lambert and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can, whose move from Germany will be ratified on Tuesday with the official opening of the transfer window for registrations. "What is apparent about Adam is that his character is on a par with his talent," Rodgers said. "We believe he fits right in with what we are trying to do at Liverpool. Adam is aware there will be great competition for places at this club and he is hungry to improve further." Southampton said it would reinvest the money received for Lallana in its squad for next season. ú25 million ($43 million) bid. Mario Addison Jersey . WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are taking a serious look this week at two of their top contenders for the first round of next months CFL draft -- a pair of offensive linemen who, they hope, are capable of starting this season and filling a hole at centre. "Pierre Lavertus here now, Matthias Goossens coming in tomorrow," general manager Kyle Walters said Tuesday. "Were going to let (offensive line coach) Bob Wylie take a look at these guys, put them through a workout. The offensive staff will get them up on the board, you know, start talking about some of our systems, see how they react." McGills Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Montreals David Foucault are currently ranked first and second in the draft but both offensive linemen also are expected to draw a lot of interest from the NFL. Lavals Lavertu and Simon Frasers Goossen are the next top-ranked offensive linemen -- Lavertu at third overall currently and Goossen at ninth. Goossen made a big jump in the CFL winter rankings to No. 5 spot from 15th and Lavertu was also ranked a spot ahead of Foucault in the January list. All four are highly regarded. Miles Gorrell, who played 19 CFL seasons as an offensive lineman including four with Winnipeg, was scouting for the Ottawa Redblacks at this years CFL combine and spoke highly of their talent. "Their footwork and hand placement are very good, its clear theyre well coached," Gorrell said. "You see guys like Pierre Lavertu, David Foucault and Matthias Goossen stepping up to the plate and being able to prove to the coaches and scouts theyre ready to take the next step." With the No. 2 pick in this years draft May 13, Walters soounded pretty confident they can get one of the players theyve identified as meeting their needs.ddddddddddddBut despite Winnipegs last-place finish last season, they have to stand in line behind the expansion Redblacks, who get to pick first. The Bombers lost free agent Justin Sorensen, last seasons starter at centre, to the Edmonton Eskimos. The Eskimos, like the Bombers, are trying to strengthen their offensive line. The Bombers took a chance on their top pick last season, defensive lineman Andy Mulumba, and lost. He signed with the NFLs Green Bay Packers. Walters, who took over after former general manager Joe Mack was sacked last season, wants this year to be different. "Were doing everything we can to make sure we make the right pick and get the right guy we want here in Winnipeg." He says there have been a few calls from other teams interested in their No. 2 pick but either nothing serious or, in the case of the only solid offer, nothing they would even remotely consider. This season their wish list and the draft seem to be aligned reasonably well. "Obviously sitting at No. 2, youre sure if youve got two guys that you like you can get one of the two . . . If thats not the case, then you maybe go down a different route," Walters said. "In a perfect world we hope that we like both these guys and if Ottawa takes one were perfectly fine with the other." At the same time, he didnt limit their interest to Lavertu and Goossen but said theyre the only two players they could bring in right now. "Some of the guys that weve reached out to, the agents havent been overly receptive to bringing them in," he said. DALLAS -- A Texas judge has rejected Lance Armstrongs request to stop an arbitration panel from reviewing $12 million in bonuses the cyclist was paid before admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs. Judge Tonya Parker declined Tuesday to stop the panel from considering whether Dallas-based SCA Promotions should be repaid the bonuses it awarded Armstrong for three of his seven Tour de France victories. Jeff Tillotson, an attorney for SCA Promotions, said Wednesday that the panel will meet March 17 to discuss his request that Armstrong forfeit prize money from those races and penalize him for committing perjury. SCA Promotions filed one of several lawsuits against Armstrong after he admitted to doping. He has been stripped of all seven victories and received a lifetime ban from the sport. SCA and Armstrong reached a 2006 settlement in arbitration after allegations surfaced that Armstrong was using banned drugs to win races. Armstrong vehemently denied the allegations during arbitration, as he did for more than a decade. After Armstrong acknowledged last year that he had been lying, SCA went to court and then back to the original three-member panel. The panel voted 2-1 in October to review the case. SCAs lawsuit quotes Armstrongs repeated denials in sworn testimony. Tillotson argued last week that Armstrong "lied at every step of the way," making it necessary for the panel to review the settlement. Armstrongs attorneys argued before Parker last week that the panel no longer had authority to review the settlement once it was signed -- even if SCA could demonstrate that Armstrong lied under oath. Armstrongs longtime attorney, Tim Herman, declined comment Wednesday night. Associated Press writer Jim Vertuno in Austin, Texas, contributed to this report. Hector Rondon Jersey . The members say theyll need thick skin, plenty of time and the ability to leave their loyalties behind to pick the four teams that will play for college footballs national title next year. They say they are ready for the pressure. "I think Ive experienced plenty of heat in my life," former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said. Rice, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning are among the 13 people who will be part of the College Football Playoff selection committee in 2014. The committee was officially unveiled Wednesday. The College Football Playoff will replace the Bowl Championship Series. The selection committee will work similarly to the one that picks the teams for the NCAA basketball tournament, though instead of 68 teams it will choose and seed four to play in the semifinals. The winners of those games, played on a rotating basis at six bowl sites, will meet a week later for the national championship. "There will undoubtedly be people who disagree with the outcome," Rice said. Rice was a surprising pick to be part of the committee because she has never worked directly in college athletics, though when she was provost at Stanford the athletic department was under her supervision and she hired Tyrone Willingham as football coach. She called herself a "student of the game." "What I can hopefully bring to this committee is critical judgment and the willingness to work real hard ... to put the best four teams on the field," she said. Rice, who grew up in Alabama, said college football has been trying to come up with a way to crown a champion for years and mentioned how the 1966 championship was muddled when Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a tie. Notre Dame was voted champion by the coaches and AP polls, but Alabama went 11-0. "It enhances head-to-head competition," Rice said about the new system. She said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott approached her about being part of the committee. "Condi definitely earned her spot on this committee," said Bill Hancock, the executive director of the BCS. "Obviously, part of this is going to be the ability to make judgments under scrutiny, and Condi has that." Rice is the only woman on the committee. Some, such as former Auburn coach Pat Dye and former Georgia star and ESPPN analyst David Pollack, have said they would prefer only those who have played football to be on the committee.dddddddddddd "Ive been in enough positions to respect people who have different views," Rice said. "I will work very hard reviewing film to make good judgments." She added: "I dont feel Im carrying the banner for anyone except those of us who love college football." The panel is made up of five current athletic directors, former players and coaches and college administrators, and a former member of the media. "Our work will be difficult, but rewarding at the same time," Arkansas athletic director and committee chairman Jeff Long said. "We have important judgments to make during that process. We realize we represent all of college football." The rest of the members are: --Barry Alvarez, athletic director, Wisconsin. --Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, former superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy. --Pat Haden, athletic director, Southern California. --Tom Jernstedt, former NCAA executive vice-president. --Oliver Luck, athletic director, West Virginia. --Dan Radakovich, athletic director, Clemson. --Steve Wieberg, former college football reporter, USA Today. --Willingham, former head coach of Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington. --Mike Tranghese, former commissioner of the Big East Conference. Hancock said term limits for committee members will eventually be three years, but that will not be the case for all the current members because they do not want to replace the entire committee at once. "We havent worked out the stagger yet," Hancock said. Committee members will recuse themselves when a team they have a direct relationship with comes up in meetings. "Its imperative for all committee members to check their loyalties and affiliations before entering the meeting room," Jernstedt said. Hancock said the committee members will be allowed to examine whatever data they believe is relevant. "No one single metric will be identified as paramount over all other data," Hancock said. Long said the committee likely will release four or five top 25 rankings during the season, starting around midseason, before the final decisions are made at the end of the regular season. "I know its going to have long hours involved," Alvarez said. "Obviously, criticism will be a part of it." PORTLAND, Ore. -- LaMarcus Aldridge had a career-high 44 points and 13 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers rallied for a 110-105 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night. Wesley Matthews added 24 points for the Blazers (32-11), who snapped a two-game losing streak coming off a 2-2 road trip. The Blazers have not lost three straight this season. Wilson Chandler had 18 points for Denver (20-21), which has lost four of their last five games after a five-game winning streak. The Blazers trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but chipped away at Denvers lead to pull to 91-90 on Wesley Matthews turnaround fadeaway before taking the lead on his 15-foot jumper. The teams wrestled for control, but Aldridges jumper put Portland up a 102-99 with 3:08 left. Chandler and Timofey Mozgov made consecutive baskets to regain the lead for Denver, and it was back-and-forth until Aldridge made four consecutive free throws to shouts of "M-V-P," from the Portland crowd, giving the Blazers a 108-105 lead. Chandler missed a jumper with 8 seconds left and Aldridge made more free throws for the final margin. The two-time All-Star, who came in a disappointing fifth among Western Conference frontcourt players in All-Star voting, made eight straight free throws to close the game. Blazers owner Paul Allen addressed the media at halftime, talking on a wide range of topics including a contract extension for Aldridge, which the team will consider "at the appropriate time." Kenneth Faried got two quick fouls early in the game and had to sit, but the Nuggets still led 30-28 at the end of the first quarter, paced by Anthony Randolph off the bench. Nate Robinsons 3-pointer stretched Denvers lead to 44-37, and the Nuggets went on to lead by as many as 12 points in the second quarter. They took advantage of an injury-depleted Chicago Bears defence and scored their most points since 2005, needing every morsel of offence from Robert Griffin III and Co., right down to Roy Helus game-deciding 3-yard touchdown with 45 seconds remaining. They beat the Bears 45-41 Sunday, raising their record to 2-4 while not doing much to alleviate the doubts surrounding the reigning NFC East champions. "When we go watch the film," Griffin said, "we wont watch it with smiles on our face. ... But I think we made enough plays today to win the game, and thats all matters." Griffin completed 18 of 29 passes for 298 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, and he also ran 11 times for a season-high 84 yards. Helu rushed for three scores, and third-round rookie tight end Jordan Reed had a breakout performance with 134 yards and a touchdown, catching all nine passes thrown his way. "Every game is big, but we sure needed it after being 1-4," coach Mike Shanahan said. "You dont want to dig yourself a bigger hole." The Redskins two victories have come against backup QBs -- Matt Flynn, who has since been released by the Oakland Raiders -- and now Josh McCown, who entered Sundays game in the second quarter after Jay Cutler left with a groin injury. McCown was seeing his first action since the 2011 season, but the Bears improved with him in the game. Chicago had 46 yards of total offence in the first half and 313 in the second. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 204 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett that gave his team a 41-38 lead with 3:57 to play. "I didnt ask him what he liked, what he didnt like," Bears coach Marc Trestman said. "I just called the plays according to the plan we had put together. I thought he functioned very well in the offence." Matt Forte rushed for three touchdowns, Alshon Jeffrey had 105 yards receiving, and Hester tied Deion Sanders NFL record for return touchdowns with an 81-yard punt runback, but the Bears (4-3) couldnt keep up because the defence was running out of playmakers. Having already lost middle linebacker D.J. Williams and two defensive tackles to season-ending injuries, Chicago had to make do without linebacker Lance Briggs (shoulder) and Charles Tillman (knee) down the stretch after both were hurt in the second half. "Theyve been here a long time, made a lot of plays. Definitely wish we could have had them out there," linebacker Jonathan Bostic said. Cutler was injured when he was brought down on the first career sack by 333-pound nose tackle Chris Baker. Cutler clutched at the top of his left leg and limped off the field. He will have an MRI on Monday. Trestman didnt have an update on Briggs or Tillman. McCown looked understandably rusty in his first few plays, but Hester was there to restore some Bears momentum with his punt return. It was his 19th career return touchdown, as well as the third special teams touchdown allowed by the Redskins in three games. The Redskins started their final possession with 3:57 to play and trailing by three. Milking the clock, they converted three third downs to set up Helus touchdown run. Griffin said the offence played most of the game in sync for the first time this season, in part because hes cleared a psychological hurdle in his return from off-season knee surgery. "I think mental part of it that I did get over was not thinking out on the field, just reacting," Griffin said. "And I dont think that was anything to do with my knee, the knee brace or anything else, I just think that was for me mentally playing the game irrelevant of my injury." Griffin also passed an unwelcome milestone. After throwing only five interceptions last season when he was the NFLs offensive rookie of the year, he threw his sixth of 2013 on Sunday when Tillman, who went to the same Texas high school as Griffin, got a pick in the first half. Griffin evened the score, however, in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard heave to Aldrick Robinson, who made the catch while Tillman and safety Chris Conte were tumbling to the turf. "He did get me with an interception," Griffin said with a smile, "but I got him back with a touchdown." It was that kind of game. Notes: Hester has 13 return TDs on punt, five on kickoffs and one on a missed field goal. ... Redskins S Reed Doughty left the game with a concussion.
